teacher1) Use the active rather than passive voice.

2) Be like Hemingway.  Shorten your sentences.

3) Eliminate “THAT” word.

The word “That” is largely over used. Often it can be replaced with a simple coma.  When you proof read, go through your essay looking for the word “That” and see how many times you can eliminate it.

Goofy Extreme Example:

She was taught that the use of the passive voice should generally be avoided and that she should avoid rephrasing, that is, in other words, the repeating or rewording of a thought, that is sort of like saying it twice.
